Arctic Design School exists for more than 40 years. During that time it went through following development stages: from initiative “student touristic union”, which resulted in a number of grassroots graduation projects on northern subject, to specialised studio under Industrial (product) design department in Ural State University of Architecture and Arts. Since then the studio has consistently graduated professionals with a focus on design for extreme conditions, and hereon the School developed into a master's programme major, aimed to train unique strategists (visionaries) in systematic problem solving regarding life in northern latitudes.
At this point the School has changed its organisational form again and became an autonomous non-profit organisation and a research unit in Siberian Design Center, National Research Tomsk State University. The current unit continues the realisation of the School’s initial mission on a new level through conducting fundamental, exploratory and practical researches in the fields of design, technical aesthetics, art, urban, cultural and regional studies (including student research).
